The Beauty and Nature of Florida

We have been enjoying our vacation in Florida with mostly warm temperatures in the mid 70s which allow for swimming almost every day in the solar heated pool at the house. Yesterday when we took the solar blanket off the water was 85F, yikes - like swimming in a bathtub!
We've done a couple of nature hikes and above is Rotary Park. Unfortunately from all the rain many of their trails became a muddy mess and we couldn't walk to some of the interesting destinations.
4 Mile Eco Cove was great for walking as they have a boardwalk through the woods and swamp with a couple of lookout points. The only wildlife we saw was a baby raccoon off to the side digging in the mud for food. Many of the trees are covered in burls (bottom right photo) and others have stilt like roots for stability. (top right)
The trail comes back to the parking lot by a war memorial tribute to Iwo Jima, seen easily from the highway.
At the house an American Coot drifted by in the canal.
The burrowing owl pair two lots over are out early each morning and with my telephoto lens and cropping, I was able to have a better look at this handsome bird.
I posted previously about the squirrels eating the avocados from the tree in our side yard but I've since discovered they are a delicacy for the turkey vultures as well. What a commotion they make fighting over the fruits on the ground.

  17. It must be so nice for you to spend time in another part of the world, especially in winter. Your pix are always wonderful. I like the one with the American Coot. Not sure I like the turkey vultures.

  18. Wow that's a hot pool indeed! It's incredible seeing posts around the world with such different weather to that which we have. It makes me long for summer. Although I'm glad to have seasons. I'd miss them if we didn't but I'm ready for warmth.

  19. It must have been wonderful to have these nature walks in Florida and your photos of the owls are supberb. So strange to see turkeys on a roof, I suppose they are wild ones. We have turkeys but not in the wild.

  28. I've been 'chasing' a burrowing owl for a couple of years now, when someone lets me know one has been spotted, I hop in the car with my camera. I've yet to photograph one....LUCKY you!!!

  29. You've been getting some great shots of the birds there Judith! Love the turkey vultures ... well, I love watching them soaring overhead, but not the prettiest bird on the ground are they? And the burrowing owl photos are beautiful. It got up to +12C today! Plus 12!!!! Woke up to no snow on the ground when yesterday we were still deep in it. Wow! Thursday it was -18C in the morning. No swimming in the pool just yet ;)

The pool temperature sounds idea to me. lol I'm sitting here shivering on this cloudy Sunday afternoon even though it's +5C outside. 37. You get more pleasure out of visiting Florida than I do living here. When I think back to my visits here, I always made the most of my limited time and visited and marveled at all of it. But once it's your "home", the everyday grind takes presidence. I used to thing all the birds came south to Florida for the winter, but not so. I do think the Vulture should be the state bird. LOL

  48. There's been a bit of a commotion over avocados here in Australia too Judith and it's because our drought has made them really expensive, so you shoo those pesky squirrels and turkey vultures away and send any spare avos over to us - ha ha! Glad to see you are enjoying your time in Florida! Enjoy your "hot" bath!

  49. Those are beautiful owls! Trails here have also been muddy but I know of three that are paved so that's where we take the dog.

  50. Judith, I am so glad you got at least some warm weather during your visit and I can't believe it is already time for you to go home. We usually take a day to drive around the Cape to look for the Owls, we always get lost and have fun winding around the mazes to get out! With all the canals, that city is so confusing.

Thank you for hosting and travel safely!
