Tea on Thursday - Revelations

Since I last posted Tea on Thursday two weeks ago I've had a few revelations.
The first was earth shattering - I downloaded the new Apple OS El Capitan and now cannot use the free photo software I've been using. Notably PicMonkey my favourite but also Fotor, PiZap and BeFunky are not compatible and freeze my computer when trying to save anything. :-(
Any other Mac users that have also downloaded El Capitan have suggestions? The PicMonkey FB page indicates they may not support the new OS and Safari.
I can still make collages on my iPad but that is going to be a task to get the photos from my computer there and back and I don't have as many options for creativity.
**UPDATE
Deanna mentioned in her comment that the only way she could save from PicMonkey in the older OS was to right click so I tried this route and was successful in saving a mosaic.
The other thing was realizing I set too high a standard for myself as host for Mosaic Monday and have changed my strategy to becoming a participant with less obligation.
There are many posts from bloggers about this concept and above is a clipart and below suggestions from a website (TARTX) for blogging without obligation:
*Because you shouldn’t have to look at your blog like it is a treadmill.
*Because its okay to just say what you have to say. If that makes for a long post, fine. Short post, fine.  Frequent post, fine. Infrequent post, fine.
*Because its okay to not always be enthralled with the sound of your own typing.
*Because sometimes less is more.
*Because only blogging when you feel truly inspired keeps up the integrity of your blog.
*Because they are probably not going to inscribe your stat, link and comment numbers on your tombstone.
*Because for most of us blogging is just a hobby. A way to express yourself and connect with others. *You should not have to apologize for lapses in posts. Just take a step back and enjoy life, not everything you do has to be “bloggable”.
*Because if you blog without obligation you will naturally keep your blog around longer, because it won’t be a chore.
I hope reading these points will help others that may have a guilt trip about reading and not commenting or feeling they have to blog more than they want.
I've found if one can get in the right frame of mind it is possible to lose weight and since August 1 I've lost 10 pounds. There are more to come off and I will confess my secret is plain old logging what I eat to watch the calories. My Fitness Pal is free and on all my devices to keep track daily. I also walk at least half an hour a day.
We all love it when a box arrives in the mail and this week I was surprised to find a Fit Bit in girlie pink sent to me from our oldest daughter. She's been tracking her food intake on My Fitness Pal along with me for support but is also a runner so we know how many calories she can burn. A big thank you to her and we'll be setting it up together over Thanksgiving.
Next Wednesday is the big reveal from Stephanie's (The Enchanting Rose) teacup exchange and it will be exciting as we all post and link with the treasures we received.
October 12 is our Canadian Thanksgiving and I wish all who are celebrating a wonderful gathering of people close to your heart with good food and stimulating conversation.

  1. Congratulations on your weight loss Judith! Lots of these fit bits being talked about on-line now. I enjoyed reading the blogging obligations list, and found many of them to be helpful. I was reading some blogs last night, trying to catch up, and was saddened to see that about six of my favourite bloggers have suddenly left over the summer. Most of them announced their departure, but some did not. I guess we're all in the same boat at times when it comes to motivation and interest in our blogs.
I'm looking forward to seeing the teacup exchange results next week! I didn't participate (too late to the party), but will still enjoy seeing the teacups everyone found and rec'd.
    Happy Thanksgiving!

  2. Best of luck in trying to find/use some of your favorite software, Judith. That's so frustrating, and I hope someone can help you out.
Congratulations on your weight loss! Wasn't that sweet of your daughter to send you the Fit Bit? I know you're looking forward to seeing your daughter and setting the Fit Bit up.
I look forward to seeing all the pretty teacups at Stephanie's party next week. Enjoy your Thanksgiving preparations for your family.

  3. Your issues with photo editing have kept me from updating to El Capitan.I will wait until they work some of the bugs out, and since I use PicMonkey, too, I'll wait to see what happens there. I know that with PicMonkey on my Mac, I can't use their save button, I have to right click and save to my computer. That's the only way it works for me. I have Yosemite OS.

Those thoughts about blogging are right!

Congratulations on your weight loss! That's great and to have your daughter's encouragement is awesome.

  4. You've lost already 10 pounds.....I should like to.....congratulations. I love that turkey candle holder at your teatable and the cookies of course.
What you say about blogging is so right. You just should write and post, just what you want not what they want to see or read, we are no slaves of our blog, a bit difficult because even I become a bit addicted, what I don't want. I have no rules, no times, no special lengths of post, sometimes posts are far too long, but it's difficult to keep something short where your heart is full of.
Wish you a Happy Thanksgiving Judith!

  5. Congratulations on your weight loss. I've put on and taken off the same 5 pounds for a couple of months, but it's slowly coming down. It takes more effort at my age.
Blogging without obligation, yes. It's a hobby, not a job.
Wishing you a very happy Thanksgiving!

  6. Hello, Judith!
These blogging suggestions are indeed helpful... and fun. Blogging only when one feels truly inspired is probably much better for the quality of the blog (a lesson to remember!). And less is very often more. :)
Have a lovely weekend and a happy Thanksgiving!

  7. Congratulations on ridding yourself of those excess pounds, Judith. It is a struggle for me too because of all my limitations but I do the best I can. The tea table looks very inviting and that is a pretty teacup. Ever since my son gifted me with a Mac, which I am thrilled to have, I have had trouble with PicMonkey too which is why I never participate in your Mosaic Monday any more. I refuse to pay for anything else on the Internet. {I have to pay to host my tea party every week and that's enough for me}. You have shared a lot of good information here and I want to thank you for it. Wishing you and your loved ones a lovely Thanksgiving weekend!

    Blessings,
    Sandi

  9. Hope that you'll post how your new blogging plan is working for you when you know. First thing to do is get rid of the stats or so I found. Letting those expectations go was the first step in backing away some. Wishing you and yours a very blessed Thanksgiving! Are you hosting?

  10. Congrats on your weightloss. I know that takes alot of hard work because I have been doing it for years and hopefully this time will be my last. My Hubby bought me a laptop and I cannot put my favorite paint shop on it. It is an old version, but I love it. So I will do all my photos and graphics on our old desktop for now.

  13. I'm glad you sort of have the linking issue worked out between picMonkey and blogger. And, also that you don't feel obligated regarding your position as host for Mosaic Monday. That is very freeing! I think it's great that you've lost weight the 'natural' way - watching your diet and walking. Wonderful! I wish you and yours a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend. Blessings, Pam

  14. I've found that I am unable to use PicMonkey through Safari, but if I do it though my Google account I don't gave trouble.

  15. Congrats Judith on losing those 10 pounds. I agree with all those comments on not feeling guilty about only blogging when you're inspired. We all get burned out from time to time, I sure do.I too have trouble with PicMonkey from time to time, but it is my favorite !

  16. Congrats on the weight loss! And saving my Picmonkey work rarely works with safari on my mac anymore--I have to right click, which is really pressing the control button. But at least its usable.

  17. Congratulations on the weight loss, Judith! Let me know how you like the Fitbit. After months of unmonitored activity, I started wearing my Fitbit again last month. Now I just gotta work on improving my number of steps!

Thanks for sharing the blogging tips. I actually follow the majority of these points and I thought I was just being a "lazy blogger". But now I can say that I'm blogging without obligations. HA!

  18. I have this problem at times. I have started using my IPAD mini with the app rhonna designs.

1.)I save my photos from my computer on flickr.
2.)Then I go to flickr on my IPAD, click on the photo, save it to my camera roll, and use it in the Rhonna app.
3.)Then I save to my camera roll(the finished product), and copy and paste it into an email.
4.)I open the email on my regular computer, and download to iPhoto.
Sounds like a lot of steps, but not really and works great.

    Godo Luck!

  19. OH your computer troubles sound awful; so sorry, and I have always thought that your Canadian Thanksgiving Holiday timing made so much more sense than ours in the USA! Yours is timed around the end of the harvest...ours is timed when harvest is long gone...rather stupid in my opinion :) But we do many stupid things here :)

  20. I use PicMonkey, so I will be sure not to download that Apple program. B/c I don't know how to fix anything! Congratulations on the weight loss! Ten pounds makes a real difference. I'll bet you are feeling better already. Keep us posted on what you think of the fitbit.
I still don't know how to manage blogging yet. I try to post twice a week, and visit as often as I can. It's very time consuming, and yet I do love it. You gave some good advice.

  21. Well done on the weight loss. We've been using MyFitnessPal for well over a year, hubby has lots 72+ bus and I've lost 35+ lbs.
I was trying a new Mosaic site, Fotojet and it didn't work with Safari but I also have Chroms (do't use it a lot) and it worked fin on there. Hope it all gets sorted out for you soon. I find Apple is having lots of updates now and with them come problems just like on the old Windows operating system.

  22. Oh I love that blogging advice, it's some of the best I've come across in a long time. I think a few of those are going in my notebook as reminders of living a life that is worth blogging about.

Happy Thanksgiving to you also Judith! And I hope that you get the computer issues worked out...how frustrating. They just updated LightRoom...and I can't figure out how to import my new photos into a new folder anymore...so the last folder is bulging...lol.

  24. THank you so much for sharing this Mac issue. I'm SOOOOO sorry you are dealing with this and know the feeling well. I have learned to wait quite a while on any update anymore but I will wait triply long before updating from Yosemite to El Capitan. THANK YOU! :) Hoping yours is ALL working normal soon!

  25. thank you for these blogging without obligation thoughts. I think we all fall into a slump, I know I feel an obligation to blog once every week, and it has been great this morning to read these thoughts. thank you! I hope you get your computer sorted. What a pain about picmonkey. Since I discovered them I never use anything else.
    Have a great week.

  26. Hello Judith, I am glad I went back and saw this post. Blogging should be fun and not feel like work. Congrats on your weight loss! I am thinking about buying on of those fitbits, it seems like they are very popular. Enjoy your day!

  27. Happy Thanksgiving! I can finally sit down! I guess it's like an old dog, new tricks. But you did it, right?
I don't feel pressure to blog. I know some do, daily. The election has been great fodder. My SIL is such a hoot!
Your weight loss, amazing. Good for you!

  28. I use Chrome on my Mac for most of my work including blogging and maybe that may help you...wise words too about blogging Judith...thank you! And congrats on the weight loss...a challenge I continue to struggle with.

  29. Judith, thank you for visiting my blog. I like that concept of B.W.O. I find blogging a wonderful thing as long as it is about sharing and inspiring. I accept even some obligations necessary from my point of view but when guilt comes into play, it's the beginning of the end so I try to exclude it from the process. I think that blogging must inspire the author first, right, how else could they inspire the others? :)
