A Garage Sale Happy Dance

Welcome friends for tea this week.  I don't drive around to garage sales, but if I pass one on my morning walk with the dog, that's a different story.
Several weeks ago, just around the corner, I saw a couple of ladies setting up their sale and spied a few teacups.  Asking if I could look early, they obliged and I picked up a pretty robin's egg blue cup and saucer.  There were some lovely Aynsley luncheon plates with cups to match and I asked if they would sell me just the plates and break up the set.  It was agreed, and I finished my walk so I could go home and get money to pay for my china.  However, while I walked, I thought about breaking up a luncheon set and decided I'd buy the teacups as well.
Everything was wrapped up, including the blue teacup and a lavender vase I wanted.  The price for 6 matching teacups, 6 luncheon plates, ginger jar, sauce/cream jar with ladle and the other 2 things - $10.
When I got home and washed everything, I realized I hadn't bargained for the two jars that matched the china but they were thrown in as well.  What intrigued me was the name of the Aynsley pattern 'Cottage Garden', and there were butterflies in the pattern.
I wasn't sure what the jar with the pointed lid was for and in my search on the internet found it to be a ginger jar.  Here's where the happy dance comes in...the swirl shape of this pattern is worth a pretty penny.  I priced a luncheon plate at $21.99 (Replacements.com) and a teacup on eBay for $39.50.  It was a good bargain to dance about.
I had a couple of friends for afternoon tea last week and used the Cottage Garden china.
There were freshly baked scones to have with marmalade,
 grape jam in this pot,
lemon curd in the ginger jar,
and whipped cream with the spoon.
A few autumn leaf decorations on the table and a pot of Heavenly Cream black tea made for a lovely afternoon of good conversation.
Have you found any great bargains at thrift or garage sales yourself lately?

  30. Oh my goodness Judith, you got the bargain of the year, well done!!!
That's what is nice about walks - always expect the unexpected.

Such beautiful Aynsley china and I'm not at all surprised about the prices on ebay.

I'm always looking for china here but it seems the dealers get in before everyone else - then they put exhorbitant prices on things.

Happy dance to your hearts content!!!

    hugs
    Shane

  38. Dear Judith,
Coming to this a little late but I bet you are still dancing the happy dance. What unbelievable buys you got!!! It is a pretty pattern that I have seen for years. So many colors in it that you could use all different napkins and tablecloths which makes it extra fun.
I think they went to the right home where they will be used, appreciated and loved.
    Happy for you, Ruthie
