Pretty Blooms of Clematis

The clematis growing over arbours and up walls look so pretty right now while in bloom and I thought I'd share a few of mine.
'Warsaw Nike' and 'Josephine' grow on the north wall of the house.  When I first planted 'Josephine' there she didn't come back the second year.  So, I planted 'Warsaw Nike' and three years later, look who cozied up to the purple blooms.  There must have been a tiny bit of root left in the ground and today, they make a handsome couple.
This is 'Niobe' that is slowly crawling up the iron arbour in the front after being planted a number of years ago.
'Abilene' is a 2013 President's Choice introduction.  She took the place of viticella 'Polish Spirit' that succumbed  last summer.  Sure enough, she just finished blooming and up shot 2 shoots of the viticella clematis.  Again, a small portion of root must have still been alive deep in my clay soil.
May people have 'The President' and he grows over the arbour into the back yard along with
the beautiful climbing rose 'New Dawn.

  14. I really would like to try to plant some, I have a huge bridge in my yard, and always thought it would be nice to have something climbing on it. Thanks for sharing, and getting the idea back in my thoughts. Thanks also for dropping by a couple of weeks ago. I'm slow in checking in with everyone who stopped by. Come back again sometime though! 15. That is amazing Judith! These clematis are so beautiful in the different colours. Our Jackmanii hasn't bloomed yet but I see a few buds. We just need some sunshine I think (pouring rain this evening again!) to make the flowers bloom on a lot of things. I like that you combined, although accidentally, the two varieties and also with the rose. Beautiful!

  16. My late father-in-law's favorite plant...took me back with your lovely photos. You had asked me if I took my damselfly photo with a point and shoot...I used my Lumix DMC-ZS20 (14.1 MP 20x Optical Zoom) which really does a good job...Michelle

  17. My little sister had a very dark purple clematis at her last home that just did so well there.

Neither of us have one now.

If I ever do an arbor I should love to grow it. I know you love your purples- they're so beautiful and healthy!

  23. Your Clematis are beautiful. My one did well after transplanting but the other is only a few leaves, unless it's a weed. Hoping next year it will grow and that they both look as good as yours do.

  26. Hi there - the funny thing about the picture of the foam on the beach, is that the picture is actually upside down - it looks just plain dull the "'wight way up" and works much better when I thought "I wonder if this will look better the other way up!"

  38. Your clematis are just beautiful. I don't have much luck with them - pulled out the last one this spring. But I'm willing to try again.
The New Dawn roses are also lovely - such a creamy shade of white. Have a wonderful Canada Day.

  39. I love clematis and am trying to train several to sprawl over the picket fence or up an arbor. They seem to have minds of their own in my back yard although in the front they are blooming and growing like crazy. I think they need a bit of weeding in the back with mulch. I find those little bits of root that show up when you think they were long gone...great surprises. Your clematis are a delight Judith!

  41. Hi Judith, I just discovered clematis this year but have yet to plant one... on the list though! :D
Yours are stunning! My New Dawn rose is just sitting there since I planted her back in May... I think I am going to move her to another spot since she doesn't seem to like where she is now...
Thanks for bringing all the lovely colors to those of us who are still awaiting our flowers to do something, LOL!
    Hugs,

  42. You have a beautiful selection, Judith. I really do need to expand our range as we have only a few. This has been the best year ever for our "The President" but now our current heat wave has zapped him a bit. I expect another wave of flowers soon. He is planted with Rosa Graham Thomas and the purple/yellow combination is beautiful.

Happy Canada Day, my friend!! Hope you have a wonderful celebration.

  51. Beautiful Clematis I have to ask you HOW????? I have 3 plants. They are spindly things. One did well last year and had about 5 flowers. Fine as it was only 2nd year. Now all three are at least 3 year old. So far this year one flower on one of them. One is growing well but spindly. What do you feed them? I really really want them to grow. Roots in shade but they grow up to mostly sun,,,,,,I just dont know
