Surprises

Everyone loves a surprise.  Over the past week, I've had 3 of them.  First, while we were away, our next door neighbour emailed me a photo of some visitors to our back yard.
My husband and I watched patiently to see if they would return, and sure enough they did.

The Mrs. seems to like sitting on the basket where the arrowhead is - good thing it emerges late.
The next surprise came in a box through the mail.  I was trying to recall what I had ordered and couldn't come up with anything, especially since the label was from the McFayden nursery.  Angela Olson, their PR lady had a letter tucked inside saying how much she has come to like calla lilies and wanted to share their joy.  The company has 2 new ones out this year and enclosed was a corm for 'Captain Safari'. Here is a photo from McFayden's website of what I can expect.; the other new calla is 'Black Star'.
The third surprise was one shared by many gardeners across Ontario. We were treated to dozens, maybe hundreds of migrating red admiral butterflies swarming the Norway maples along the street for sap.
It was very windy the day our yard was filled with them darting about but here you can see a couple on the Norway maple.
The rocks on the waterfall of our pond seemed to be a favourite spot for sunning.
A little fun I had using another photo editor to make a collage - I miss Picnic.
I'm linking with Little Red House for Mosaic Monday, come join us.

  2. Hi Judith: How lovely to have so many surprises waiting on your return home. The calla lillies are going to be beautiful and I bet those butterflies were something to see. We had a pool at our other house and the ducks would fly in occasionally to take a swim. Very cute..Happy Saturday..Judy

  3. Such lovely surprises!
I haven't had much luck with calla lilies. This year I may try to grow them in a pot to provide a more controlled environment. I have an idea that our garden is just too dry.

  4. What lovely surprises! I would love to have a pond in our back yard where the ducks could go for a swim. There is a small one in behind our place but there are trees between us. The lilies are lovely and I would imagine the butterflies were a sight to see. Have a wonderful weekend.

  10. Judith, three lovely surprizes! What fun to not remember what you ordered and have it be a surprize. I think that's why I don't label my spring bulbs....I forget what's going to come up!

I thought you were going to say the third surprize was the SNOW that we got in our region on Thursday!

    Cheers,
    Diane
