Camera Critters - Red for Valentine's Day

With Valentine's Day tomorrow I thought about how I could include it in my Camera Critters post.
Well, red is the symbolic colour for this occasion and the northern cardinal is such a beautiful deep red, he was my first choice.

But then we can't overlook one of the early harbingers of spring, robin red breast.  Robins have started overwintering in our part of central Ontario the last few years but spring does deliver lots of them back to us   so this was my second choice.

My third choice was this ladybug warming herself on the birdbath.  Certainly not a beautiful deep red but more of an orange-red, she is an important beneficial insect in my garden and deserves to be acknowledged too.
Since I couldn't decide on one photo over the other, I've included all three of my favourite red critters and wish everyone a Happy Valentine's Day on the 14th.
I hope you will visit Misty Dawn who hosts Camera Critters each week to see many adorable pets and wildlife photo captures.

  1. LC: Fun choices for Valentines Day, I love the Winter colors of a Cardinal. There backs almost turn to a purple color.

  2. Great choices to mark the day! The cardinal is magnificent. I often wonder why the male of the species so often in the animal kingdom is so much brighter and colourful than the females? Doesn't seem quite right to me!

  5. One of the ladybug's spots is heart shaped so it doubly qualifies. Nice pics.

  6. Great shots!
I've been watching for a robin to show up. This time last year they were back but not a one yet.
Michael's right - that little heart on Ms. Ladybug is perfect.
    Happy Valentine's Day.

  11. Very nice selection for a Valentines Day post.

We have lots of Cardinals here and I even had a ladybug crawing about in the house just yesterday but I havn't see a robin since December. With all of the snow we have had in the last week I'm beginning to long for the robins return.

  13. Beautiful photographs and a good way to celebrate valentines day!

Thanks for stopping by my blog. In reference to your question about the elk:

I have never been charged, but have had a few tense moments. On the whole these animals are quite accepting of humans and will ignore you if you show them respect and do not invade their personal space. I have heard of one instance where one knocked a photographer down when he got within a few feet of a bull and took a picture with a flash which resulted in the attack. In another case the photographer was calling the elk with a bugle call and he got too close and knocked the person down breaking a leg in the process.

  14. Great photos! The cardinals here like to tease me and fly away when I touch my camera. Can't believe you have robins wintering over!

I love all the pictures of flowers. It reminds me we have that to look forward to.

Thanks for visiting Porch Days. Hope you will return!
